10 Questions for Finding the Perfect Inn - June 17, 2003

A trend toward taking shorter vacations and staying closer to home has prompted Travelers Advantage® to suggest 10 questions to ask in your search for the perfect inn or bed and breakfast.

"Domestic travel within North America seems poised for a summer resurgence," Travelers Advantage Vice President Julia Ryan said. ""Americans are planning to vacation, but they will be staying closer to home. Some are planning leisure trips with family and friends while others are looking for a romantic getaway for two."

"Three trends are combining to make B&Bs and small inns into perfect destinations this summer," said Pamela Lanier, director of Bed & Breakfasts, Inns and Guesthouses International, one of the largest membership organizations of independent lodging with 7,500+ members worldwide. "The continuing trend toward drive-to tourism is combining with a trend toward more frequent but shorter vacations. Add increased awareness of inns as an alternative to other types of lodging and the end result appears to be an upcoming boom.

"So far, we're seeing travel by both married couples, in urgent need of an intimate getaway, and families taking the classic 'car vacation'" Lanier added. Some 1,100 intimate bed & breakfast specials across America are featured on the Travelers Advantage Web site (http://www.travelersadvantage.com/ or call 1-800-458-1028).

"Considering 10 questions will help travelers find the perfect inn or bed and breakfast. For more than 20 years, we've been helping people find the place for them to stay," Lanier said. "By working with Travelers Advantage, we're able to offer both advice and money-saving deals."

The 10 questions to answer include:
1. Consider the purpose of your getaway: Is it a romantic weekend for two or quality family time?
2. How far are you planning to travel and how are you going to get there? Will you need a car or can you walk to nearby attractions?
3. Are you looking for an urban or rural environment? Will you attend a festival or just relax in a hammock to catch up on your reading?
4. What is your budget?
5. How important is food? Some B&Bs, inns and guesthouses offer gourmet dining while others specialize in family-style fare.
6. Are you looking for a luxurious room furnished with antiques or something more casual next to the beach?
7. Are you looking for a B&B or an Inn? B&Bs can be anything from a home with three or more rooms to, more typically, a large house or mansion with eight or nine guest rooms where breakfast is served each morning. An Inn is a "house built for the lodging and entertainment of travelers." Many provide meals, at least breakfast - although some don't - and most have less than 30 rooms. Which one works best for you?
8. Your innkeeper can be a great resource for planning your trip. Most have firsthand knowledge concerning the best restaurants, museums and local sites that the guidebooks may not offer.
9. What season will you be traveling? Are you interested in fall foliage or a warm beach in Florid
10. Use multiple resources, including the Internet and guidebooks when planning your getaway.
